Xima Gallery is currently presenting artist Zhou Yuyue's solo exhibition Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit— on view until July 31. This quiet dialogue on identity, displacement, and self‑reinvention is open to all. We look forward to welcoming you to the gallery…

'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit' is the 1985 semi-autobiographical novel by British writer Jeanette Winterson. Its title resonates with the idea that there is never only one answer—a belief shared by curator Nikyo and artist Zhou Yuyue, who embrace it as a guiding credo: life never follows just one path. In one of her speeches, Winterson observed that narrative patterns are human constructs, not immutable laws like those of physics; rather, they are open-ended proposals that we build even as we live them. Isn't this very exhibition itself an act of deconstructing and reconstructing the self?

We have all, at some point, inhabited a world where only the orange was deemed the correct fruit—moving from tentative uncertainty, through the rupture of imposed boundaries, and ultimately toward a state of inner fullness and peace. Artistic creation condenses this journey of the heart while paying homage to all that is uniquely alive: there is no obligation to conform to prescribed norms; the fruits of this world take countless forms, and so too does the self, which is, by its very nature, multiple.

This exhibition stages a rupture with the constraints of monolithic normalisation. By negotiating the boundaries of the self and continually reconfiguring identity, it searches within contradiction itself for a mode of coexistence between the self and subjectivity.
